Joint Cyber Security Advisory: Russian state-sponsored and criminal cyber threats

Summary

The cyber security authorities of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom are releasing this Joint Cyber Security Advisory (CSA) to inform organisations that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine could expose organisations both within and beyond the region to increased malicious cyber activity. Recent Russian state-sponsored cyber operations have included distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and older operations have included deployment of destructive malware against Ukrainian government and critical infrastructure organizations.

The NCSC currently sees an increased potential for cyber-attacks on critical infrastructures, which may have a serious impact, even for countries and organisations not directly targeted. Organisations should take the opportunity to consider their security posture, understand their critical systems and risks – including across their supply chain – and exercise readiness. This joint advisory with our partners provides organisations with important information which will help them to build their cyber resilience by identifying and mitigating risks they face.
